ASEAN chairs are now tasked with juggling the annual agenda to address the Myanmar crisis on top of other rising challenges facing the region.įor the last two years, ASEAN members have been split on whether they should take a stronger stance against the violent actions of Myanmar’s military government. The immense challenges of Myanmar’s economic, political, and humanitarian crises have revealed the Achilles heel of the 10-member regional bloc of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Facing its third year of civil unrest since the February 2021 coup that sidelined the country’s democratic transition, Myanmar has struggled with widespread corruption, violence, and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of citizens.
